What causes the tongue to turn yellow?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My tongue has looked yellow for a couple of days now. What is the cause? How to get rid of this?

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query, and I can understand your concern. I would like to know some things. Do you have any gastric problems? Sometimes, gastric problems can lead to a yellow tongue. Do you have any itchy skin lesions? Fungal infection is another cause. Treat it if you have. Do you have plaque and calculus accumulated on your teeth? If yes, then get it cleaned (scaling). Clean your tongue regularly, twice a day, and use Chlorhexidine gluconate mouthwash twice a day about 20 to 30 minutes after tooth brushing.

I hope this helps.
