After consuming whey protein for six years, what might cause stomach pain now?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been using whey protein from the time I started working out for the past 5 to 6 years. But recently, I developed stomach pain when I drank whey (isolate pain, specifically). The stomach pain lasts for approximately 20 to 30 minutes and gets better over time. So what could be the reason?

Please give your suggestions.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Consumption of whey protein is linked to stomach issues like abdominal cramping. This is because it could be irritating to the gastric mucosa. Hence they can cause cramps, or you could have associated gastritis. If this persists or worsens, I suggest you to get an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy done. So is the pain followed by a bowel movement? If yes, then it is just a side effect of whey. So just observe for a few more days and drink lots of water.

If the pain persists or does not improve, get an endoscopy done. If there are any other symptoms, kindly let me know. Also, if you explain the exact location of the pain, it would be helpful in diagnosis and management.

I hope this helps.

Take care.
