Why does my friend have upper abdominal pain while inhaling?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My boyfriend is having pain in his right upper abdominal area while breathing. This is the third time, and it started around 7 pm at night and so he went to the hospital. They told me that they are unable to find anything on X-ray or blood work. He woke up in the morning and still, and he still has extreme pain.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Abdominal pain can arise from several conditions, such as gallbladder stones, bile duct stones, stomach ulcers, or pancreatitis.

Your boyfriend may take an Esomeprazole 40 mg capsule half an hour before meals. For pain, he can take Tramadol 100 mg, or if unavailable, Celecoxib 100 mg. Please avoid other painkillers, as they can worsen symptoms if peptic ulcers are present. In addition, he may take Gaviscon syrup 15 ml half an hour after meals, four times daily.

Possible causes of his abdominal pain include peptic ulcer disease, gallstones, bile duct stones, pancreatitis, intussusception, or volvulus.

I strongly suggest the following investigations to help rule out these possibilities:

Serum amylase

Ultrasound abdomen.

Let me know if you need any further clarification.

Thank you.
