Can using antibiotics and topical retinoids help treat acne?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently moved, and my skin was almost perfectly clear before the move. However, since relocating, I have been experiencing severe breakouts, primarily cystic acne along my jawline, as well as numerous blackheads on my nose, forehead, and cheeks. I have also started to develop breakouts on my arms. My usual daily skincare routine includes using a face wash, followed by a witch hazel toner, and I finish with SPF. I maintain a regular workout routine and stay well-hydrated. I have struggled with acne throughout my entire life, and during my teenage years, I had severe cystic acne all over my face. Typically, living in a more humid climate has been beneficial for my skin. I am meticulous about caring for my skin, and because it is very sensitive, I often rely on my own homemade DIY face masks, scrubs, and cleansers. Please suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Pimples are hormonal and often related to oily skin. I suggest you follow a few guidelines, avoid using hair oil and any sticky creams on your face. Stay away from oily foods, chocolate, and dairy products. Avoid exposure to dust and make sure to use sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 30. When applying any cream, avoid rubbing it on your face, and do not use any steroid creams. Continue the treatment for at least one month. Face wash or soaps are not considered a treatment and are not very useful. Do not touch acne and avoid squeezing it. For treatment, consider using Clindamycin gel as it is both preventive and curative. Apply it all over your face in the morning. Also, use Adapalene gel specifically on acne at night and take one tablet of Doxycycline 100 mg once a day.

Hope I have clarified your query. Feel free to reach out if you have any further queries.

Thank you.
