What does it mean if my iron level is at 9.5 %?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had a blood test, which showed that I have an iron level of 9.5 percent. My TIBC is 65, and my ferritin level is 130. Does this on its own suggest anemia? Also, would this warrant further testing like a colonoscopy?

Please answer.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for the query. Iron Deficiency in a young male is not shared and should be tested further. To begin with, you should get deworming done mainly if you have traveled to developing countries or eat out regularly. Secondly, you should contact your stool tested for occult blood. Also, you should check for any latent celiac disease. Lastly, both Upper GI (gastrointestinal) and colonoscopy may be needed to complete iron deficiency evaluation.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply. I have not had confirmed IDA yet. As I mentioned above, my iron is low, but my ferritin & TIBC is normal.

Please answer.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Since you do not have any other disease, I doubt anemia of chronic illness should be a DD (differential diagnosis) in a young male.

I would suggest being evaluated for IDA (iron deficiency anemia).

Regards.
