What causes a sudden onset of tiny itchy bumps in the body?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

For the past couple of weeks, I have been feeling very itchy and breaking out in little bumps. I went to the doctor to find out if it was an allergic reaction or something else, but they were not very helpful.

They prescribed me Desonide for the breakouts. I have been using it, but it has not helped with the itching. I also spoke with a pharmacist, and she asked if I had ever experienced eczema. I did when I was a child, but I thought I had grown out of it.

She recommended taking Claritin for the itching, using a moisturizing lotion, and continuing to use Desonide. I have been doing this for a couple of days, and I am still itching like crazy. I do not know what else to do.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query. Profuse itching over your body, leading to a few red bumps, could be an urticaria or an allergic reaction. Since it has lasted for two weeks, it can be acute urticaria. Urticaria usually comes down in 24 - 48 hours to appear in other areas. These can also be called hives.

A complete blood count, along with a differential count and an IgE (immunoglobulin E) test, is advised.

The differential diagnosis includes acute urticaria.

Treatment involves using anti-pruritic creams to relieve itching. If the itching persists, a topical steroid like Mometasone may be applied over the affected area.

In cases where there are numerous red bumps and itching remains uncontrolled, a short course of low-dose oral steroid, such as Prednisone 5 mg for one week, can be considered. This may be combined with oral antihistamines, Hydroxyzine 10 mg at night and Fexofenadine 120 mg in the morning, to help manage the symptoms effectively.

Take care.
