Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My 10-year-old son has been suffering from an itchy nose and eyes for the past month. We consulted an eye specialist and an ENT. They both said that it was an allergy and prescribed their medicines. But, there was no sign of improvement. Kindly suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
What are your son's symptoms? Can you elaborate on those?
Please answer a few questions-
1. Do these symptoms occur regularly?
2. Have these occurred before the past month?
3. Do the symptoms worsen or lessen during any time of the day or any time of the year?
4. Are the symptoms more while your son is at any particular place?
5. Are the symptoms more in the morning?
6. Are the symptoms more in the school or play area?
7. Is there any nose block or running nose?
8. Does he experience any throat pain?
9. Have you noticed any mouth breathing or snoring in the night?
10. Does he sneeze a lot?
11. What medicines have you tried?
12. Have you done any blood tests for this purpose?
13. Have you done an IgE or immunoglobulin E test?
14. Have you done any X-rays of the nose and sinuses?
15. Does he experience any breathing trouble or respiratory trouble? Any sound while he breathes? Any wheezing? Has he ever required inhalers to deal with wheezing or breathlessness?
Itching of the eyes and nose are indeed symptoms of an allergy. But, we want to see if there is anything complicating it.
Allergy, per se, is not curable. But, with care and proper management and allergen avoidance, it can be kept to a minimum, and the quality of life can be improved considerably.
I would like to know all the details that I have asked you for and would assess the same.
Do revert to me with all details. We shall help you surely.
Do attach all the reports and records that you have of your son with regards to these complaints and doctor's visits.
Hope to see your son better soon.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thank you for your reply.
My son has been suffering from itchy eyes and nose for the last one and a half months. I consulted an ENT, and he prescribed these medicines: Karvol clear drop, Toff DC suppressant, and steam inhalation with Vicks thrice a day. I also consulted an eye specialist, and the doctor prescribed these medicines: Zylopred eye drops four times for seven days, thrice for another seven days, then twice, and then once. She also prescribed Olopat eye drops and Teardrops eye drops. My son showed an improvement as far as itchy eyes are concerned. But, the itching in the nose has no improvement.
He does not have continuous itching, but the itching starts anytime in the day. More so at night and not necessarily in the morning. It irritates him a lot. It does not necessarily happen when he is at school or playing outside. Yes, there is a mild blockage in the right nostril. He does not snore. He sneezes and has a slightly running nose only when the nose itches. We have not done any tests as the doctors did not prescribe any. He also does not have any breathing or respiratory trouble. Kindly suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
Your son seems to be having an allergy, as the other doctors have said. He will be better with Montelukast and Levocetirizine kids dosage, say 5 mg Montelukast and 2.5 mg Levocetirizine. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her and start the medicines with their consent.
He must avoid dust, cold air, cold drinks, and pollution. You must try and make a note of the surroundings and conditions when this problem occurs.
Montek-LC (Montelukast and Levocetirizine) kid will be ideal for him, which he must take for a week. If the condition does not resolve, he may need to do an X-ray of the soft tissue nasopharynx in the lateral view, basic blood investigations, CBC (complete blood count), absolute eosinophil count, and serum IgE or immunoglobulin E test. These tests will help us understand the problem.
I hope this helps.
Kindly revert so I can assist you further.
Thank you.
