What are effective remedies for nighttime allergic cough?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a cough, and the mucus is white. Every night, I suffer from this kind of situation. I have a background in medical records, and the doctor said that I am allergic to dust and cold beverages. But I do not think that I am allergic to dust because I do not have any symptoms.

Every night, I take Cetirizine because every time I take it, the cough stops. But I am scared that it might get worse. What should I do? I have done a urine test and a chest X-ray for this problem.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

You probably have allergic pharyngitis. Avoid spicy, oily, and junk food altogether for a few days. Dust could be one reason why your nose and throat might be producing a lot of phlegm. Sometimes, even dust at home (like when you vacuum, mop the floor, or handle old dusty items) can lead to such issues.

Additionally, even mild acidity can be a hidden cause. In allergic pharyngitis, you might not have many symptoms except for mucus irritating your throat. I advise you to eat simple food with minimal spices, avoid dust at all costs, and wear a mask, as that is the most effective protection against dust.

Consider saltwater gargles (one glass of boiled warm water with two spoons of salt, dissolve and gargle) and keep sipping warm water. Long-term use of Levocetirizine is not recommended, so start an antireflux treatment with a tablet of Pantoprazole 40 mg once a day in the morning, 25 minutes before breakfast.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach out to me again in case of further queries.

Thank you.
