Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 19-year-old female. After sneezing, I noticed something round and grey. Sometimes, I feel short of breath and heaviness around the heart.

I begin to feel body pain and tiredness after climbing 20 stairs.

Please advise.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The round, grey material you noticed after sneezing is most likely thickened nasal mucus. During allergies, sinus congestion, mild infection, or dehydration, nasal secretions can become dense and may appear as a small lump when expelled forcefully. This is a common and benign finding and does not represent tissue from the lungs or heart.

Your symptoms of breathlessness on mild exertion, chest heaviness, body pain, and fatigue are most commonly seen in anemia, especially in young women. Low hemoglobin levels reduce oxygen delivery to the body, leading to early tiredness and shortness of breath even with minimal activity, such as climbing stairs. Anxiety-related breathing issues or mild asthma can also cause similar symptoms.

At your age, serious heart disease is unlikely; however, evaluation is important. A doctor would typically check hemoglobin and iron levels, and if these are normal, further assessment for allergy-related airway issues or anxiety may be considered. If your symptoms worsen or occur even at rest, a prompt medical review is advised.

I suggest that you undergo tests such as an echocardiogram and a chest X-ray, and then revert with the results so I can guide you better.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
