Anesthesia awareness has been quite common due to the unavailability of short-acting anesthetic drugs. It occurs mainly because of the inadequate depth of the surgical plane achieved. So, in general terms, the patient is under the effects of anesthesia, but they are still aware of their surroundings. Nowadays, BIS (bispectral index) monitoring could help prevent anesthesia awareness.
