Is angioplasty required if triglyceride levels are high?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My triglycerides (TGL) level is 530 mg/dL. When I consulted doctors, many suggested options like angioplasty. Do I need to undergo an angioplasty? With medication, food control, and exercise, is it possible to reduce my TGL levels to 60 to 170 mg/dL?

Kindly suggest.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I assume you did not experience any chest pain or shortness of breath. The need for angiography and angioplasty depends not only on the lipid levels but also on other tests, such as an ECG (electrocardiogram) and an echocardiogram, which help predict the possibility of blockages. It also depends on whether you have had chest pain. Additionally, the need for angiography is influenced by the troponin level, which is a marker for heart attack, and it may be elevated. If it is indeed elevated, you will need angiography.

Therefore, you should undergo an ECG and an echocardiogram. If either shows abnormalities, angiography will be required. If you have already undergone these tests, please upload them here. If the results are normal, you may need additional tests, such as a stress test (e.g., stress thallium) or CT (computed tomography) coronary angiography.

You will also need to take medications for the abnormal lipid profile, such as Rosuvastatin, Fenofibrate, and possibly Aspirin, as well as medications for blood sugar control. Without medications, it is unlikely you will be able to control these imbalances, so it is important to begin treatment. In addition, you should follow a healthy lifestyle, including a low-calorie, low-sugar, low-fat, and less-oily diet. Regular exercise, such as walking or brisk walking according to your capacity, is essential, along with a goal of weight loss.

Thanks and regards.
