How to manage an ankle sprain and swelling of a long duration?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I sprained my ankle two months ago, and the ankle swelled up. The swelling went down a little, and it still is swollen. According to my doctor, it is just a stretch in the ligament, and resting at home would help improve it. Is it normal to have a swollen ankle for this duration? What can I do to make it heal fast? Can I massage or swim to improve my ankle?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I understand your concern.

I suggest you to follow a few instructions mentioned below.

  1. Keep your legs and ankle elevated.
  2. Use an air-stirrup ankle support brace or orthosis. You can wear shoes over it too.
  3. Apply ice thrice daily for two days.
  4. Take vitamin D and calcium supplement tablets for a month. Avoid these tablets if you have any allergic reactions or asthma.
  5. Do wobble board exercises (physical therapy) to strengthen the muscles once the pain reduces.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
