Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 14-year-old, weighing 140 lbs, and I am around five feet four inches tall. I have been dealing with intense pain in my left ankle. It all started back nine years ago when I badly sprained it. Despite the injury, I made the mistake of walking on it the very next day, and I think I may have rushed the healing process, potentially making it worse. Right now, the pain is at about an eight out of ten, and it seems to worsen no matter what I do. I am limping a lot and constantly complaining about the pain. In addition, my knee has also started to hurt. I used to play basketball frequently, but I recently decided to quit due to these ongoing issues. The pain in my ankle is sharp and stems from that severe sprain I had about 19 months ago. It was so bad that I could not walk on it for three whole weeks, but despite the pain, I continued playing basketball. I never got it checked out by a doctor. I have also been experiencing frequent knee pain. I need your advice on what steps I should take. Are there any recommended treatments or actions I should consider? I currently use an inhaler for my asthma.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern. I suggest you get X-rays and an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of your ankle done. Based on the information you provided, this could potentially be cartilage damage or bone edema in the ankle joint. I suggest you make sure to elevate your feet as much as possible during the day. In addition, I suggest you use an ankle support brace which you can wear over it as well. Also apply ice three times a day for two days. In addition, I suggest you take the following medications:

  1. Take a tablet of Paracetamol 500 mg after food, twice a day, for ten days.
  2. Take a tablet of Rabeprazole 20 mg before food, twice a day, for ten days.
  3. Take a tablet containing calcium and vitamin D3 500 mg before food, twice a day, for 30 days.
  4. Take a tablet Vitamin D (60,000 units) once daily for ten days, then once a month for the next 11 months.

Please ensure that you are not allergic to any of these medications before taking them. If you have bronchial asthma, do not take these tablets. I suggest you consult a specialist, talk with them and take medications with their consent. I hope this has helped you. Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.

Investigations to be done

I suggest you get an X-ray of the affected ankle joint with an anterioposterior and lateral view. MRI of the affected ankle joint- plain

Differential diagnosis

1. Cartilage injury.

2. Bone edema of the ankle.

Regarding follow up

Kindly follow-up with suggested X-ray and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan reports.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
