What causes pain during movements and ankle swelling following a 7-year-old ankle injury?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I injured my right ankle while playing soccer seven years back. It was an eversion, but I continued playing soccer using a crepe bandage as I have never had an ankle sprain before. So I thought it is nothing although I was able to see blood on the skin for two or three days after the injury day when I sit cross-legged. I used ice for that, but unfortunately, pain and swelling were still there below the inside bump, malleolus part of my right ankle. I went to an orthopedic doctor four months after the injury. He asked for an X-ray and everything was alright. Then he asked for an MRI. In the MRI, it was found that I had a 40 to 50 % tear in my tibiocalcaneal ligament with minimal injury in the tibiotalar ligament and mild effusion. I feel pain when I shoot the football and minimal pain while running. But I know there is something wrong with my right ankle as ligaments are damaged and I also have swelling on the inside bump of my right ankle. Please tell me how much time will it take to heal and what should I do to recover. Will I get recovery or not? I have no problem with the range of motion. I just feel pain during eversion and mild pain while running and walking. But it is very little and now it has been one month after the MRI. I am on rest after that MRI. I am also using an ankle brace after the MRI report. And, does scar tissue stop the process of ligament healing or worsen the actual healing process? Please answer all my questions. I am feeling very low as I do not know if I will be able to continue soccer again or not. I did not stop playing football for four months after the injury and after the MRI report only I stopped. I do normal walking and running. Currently, I am taking homeopathic medicines for the past 15 days.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

The probable diagnosis is ankle tibiocalcaneal ligament partial tear. Yes, it will heal. It heals with a total of three months of rest. You can walk with the brace but avoid running and playing sports. The best brace is Air-Stirrup Ankle Brace. You need to wear this all day and even while sleeping, just take it off while bathing. Partial ligament tears can heal easily, so do not worry. Internal scars help in healing as the ruptured ligament will heal with fibrosis. So you still have to wear the brace for six more weeks and avoid playing sports. I suggest you take the following medications:

  1. Tablet Vitamin C 500 mg twice a day in the morning and night for six weeks.
  2. Tablet Shelcal (calcium and vitamin D3) 500 mg twice a day before food in the morning and night for six weeks.
  3. Tablet Vitamin D 60K once daily for ten days followed by once a month for 11 months.

Take these tablets only if you are not allergic to them. Do not take these tablets if you have bronchial asthma. Kindly consult a specialist, talk to them, and take medications with their consent. You can have a follow-up after three weeks.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
