Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Last week I sprained my ankle very badly, and it was swollen. I thought it popped out, but luckily it was not. I got an X-ray, and nothing was broken. I got a cast, and yesterday it was removed and replaced with a bandage. I still walk using walking sticks, and it is still swollen. I have a trip in two weeks. Is recovery going to be possible to the point where I will be able to walk around the city?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Ankle joint injuries without any evidence of bony injury in the X-rays are mostly soft tissue or ligamentous injuries. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the ankle and foot would be the best investigation for knowing the exact location of tendons or soft tissues. Swelling is a common problem in any ankle ligament injury. Usually, the sprained or partially torn ligament gets healed by itself in three to four weeks. An ankle plaster is applied for a minimum of three weeks by most surgeons to reduce ankle movements and help the healing of the soft tissue or the ligaments. The swelling will appear after a day's work and subside when you lie down or sleep. In any ankle or foot injury, swelling takes time to settle down. Just make a habit of avoiding long walks and longer standing time, try to keep your limb elevated on two pillows whenever lying down, take some good anti-inflammatory drugs along with ligament-enhancing collagen-like medicines, and have a good protein-rich diet. It will eventually heal. You can plan your trip but keep an eye following my advice.

Thank you.
