Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 33-year-old lady and five months pregnant. In my ultrasound report, it says the baby has two vessels in the umbilical cord. Rest of the reports are normal. The doctor suggested me that everything is fine. But, I am worried regarding the complications due to two vessels. Should I go with further examinations or follow the doctor? What may the complications be? If it is there, then does it affect up to birth or after birth?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The umbilical cord should have three vessels. Either the doctor missed one vessel or the baby has only two vessels. So, have a confirmatory scan from a center where a high-risk obstetrics specialist is available. A scan by a senior or very experienced sonologist will be advisable. Now, if the report comes again as two vessels, anomalies in the kidney and heart has to be ruled out. Hopefully, they have been ruled out by this fifth-month scan. You can have a 3D or 4D scan to rule out anomalies and fetal echocardiography at 22 to 24 weeks to rule out cardiac problems in the baby. Do not worry. I have seen many pregnancies where we had to keep monitoring repeatedly with scans, but there would not be any problem. The baby's growth would be absolutely normal. But, do get a confirmation with a better scan.

Hope I have clarified your query. Do write back. All the best.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
