Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am struggling to eat food. I get so anxious that the food will worsen my anxiety. I do not know what to do. I lost weight because of it. I fear certain foods like potatoes because I heard they can cause anxiety. I do not care about weight loss or gain. I honestly fear the effects the food will have on my body. A few years back, I had a fear of swallowing food, but I overcame that. I am currently taking birth control pills.

Thank you.

Hello doctor,

I read your query and understand your concern.

I suggest you should know more about anxiety. Anxiety is your body's defense mechanism. It is an essential defense mechanism. Anxiety helps you make a "fight or flight" decision according to the situation. Anxiety symptoms such as fast heartbeat, shivering, feeling uneasy, sweating, etc., are not harmful to your body. These symptoms are produced by your body to save you. So anxiety cannot be cured. Repeated anxiety episodes are called anxiety disorders. Anxiety disorder mainly happens because you fail to understand anxiety as an integral part of your body and start fearing anxiety symptoms. The more you fear the symptoms (fast heartbeat, shivering, feeling uneasy, sweating, etc.) of anxiety, the more you get anxious. So understand anxiety. The anxiety symptoms mentioned above cannot harm you at all. Food has nothing directly to do with anxiety triggers. Your fear of anxiety symptoms triggers anxiety symptoms. I suggest anxiety education for you. Anxiety education takes time, so I suggest you consult a psychiatrist.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
