Is it normal for a newborn to vomit milk and not pass urine?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My daughter is 2 days old. She is not urinating and vomiting the milk she drinks. The doctors say that the baby had some amniotic fluid intake during labor.

During labor, my wife tried for six hours for a normal delivery. But the head was stuck. So, she opted for a cesarean. Now, the mother is doing good and the milk is not secreted yet. As there was no intake for the baby due to vomiting, she is on drips currently to avoid dehydration. How long will it take for the fluid to come out of the baby? How long will it take generally for the baby to urinate? How long does it take for the mother to secrete milk? Looking forward to your opinion.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

It is advisable to get a gastric wash if the vomiting persists. Please get the child evaluated by a pediatrician for the same. The child should urinate in the first 24 hours. If the child does not urinate, it may signify an anomaly or indicate less intake. A primipara mother can secrete milk in full flow by the third day.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
