Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My boyfriend had a very high bilirubin (7 mg/dL), and now he has turned yellow. He lives abroad, and this time when he came, we kissed and did not have sex, but I only touched his genitals. Could it be possible that I got hepatitis B or A or jaundice? I will still do a test, but if he has it, could it be that even I have it?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The hepatitis B virus is present in the saliva of an infected person; however, it has never been documented to have transmitted the infection to someone. Therefore, if you did not come into contact with his body fluids like blood and semen, you are safe as the viral load in the saliva is not high enough to cause infection. Nevertheless, you are at a high risk of contracting the disease, so please get vaccinated. If you are still worried, you can get your blood screened for HbsAg (hepatitis B surface antigen).

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
