Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been told that I have a thalassemia minor and I know that I cannot donate blood. I am also a diabetic. Is there anything else I should not do?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern. You are having thalassemia and diabetes, hence you cannot donate blood. As in endocrine disorders like diabetes, the donor is permanently deferred. You have to take care of the maintenance of blood sugar and Hb (hemoglobin) levels within the limit. You have written BMI (body mass index) 47 which is too high.

Hence follow the following suggestions:

  1. Lose weight through regular exercises like walking, jogging, running, etc.

  2. Take a low-sweet diet.

  3. Take a low-salt diet.

  4. Measure your blood pressure.

If by lifestyle measures, diabetes does not come under control then antidiabetic drugs like tablet Glimepiride (Amaryl) and tablet Metformin Hydrochloride (Fortamet) can be suggested. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take the medicines with their consent. If blood pressure is too high then antihypertensive medication can be given. So regularly check blood pressure and serum RBS (random blood sugar), serum FBS (fasting blood sugar), Hb (hemoglobin) levels, etc. It is also better to investigate with treadmill testing and EKG (electrocardiogram) testing annually. Take care. Thank you for choosing icliniq.

I am happy to help you and will always be available whenever you need me at icliniq.com.
