Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had sexual intercourse with my girlfriend three days ago, but my condom tore at that time. Currently, I am worried that I might contract a sexually transmitted disease or HIV. How can I prevent this?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern. Firstly, I would like to inform you that if there was a tear or break in the condom, you were at risk of acquiring HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) and other STIs (sexually transmitted diseases). The condom serves as a barrier for protection, and if it was compromised, there was a breach in that protection. The longer you engaged in sexual activity with a broken condom, the greater the risk. Therefore, if you are unaware of your partner's HIV status, it is advisable to undergo HIV testing. In these circumstances, I recommend going for an HIV Rapid screening test now, which will provide your baseline HIV status. Follow it up with a repeat fourth generation HIV rapid combo test after four weeks. If the result is negative, confirm it again at three and six months with a repeat HIV rapid antibody test. The HIV test kits used nowadays are highly sensitive, specific, and provide accurate results. I also suggest getting tested for other STIs, including syphilis, herpes, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and HPV (human papilloma virus). Regarding your fear or worry, I advise you to remain calm. It is natural to feel anxious, but worrying alone will not change the situation. It is better to know your HIV status through testing rather than living in a state of uncertainty and stress. I hope this has helped you. Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
