Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My wife is suffering from body pain and a feeling of weakness every day. She is calcium deficient. Will any protein supplement help?
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com. If your wife is having low calcium then protein supplements will not help. First calcium deficiency should be treated and then you can add protein supplements. Low calcium (hypocalcemia) may be due to many reasons like, decreased intake of calcium, Low vitamin D level, hypothyroidism, blood disorders, kidney disease. Once the cause of low calcium gets treated then the levels will automatically revert to normal. Take foods which increase calcium are milk, yoghurt, cheese, milk-based custard, leafy green vegetables, broccoli, cabbage, spinach, fish, meat and almonds. Also, you can take calcium tablets like tablet Shelcal 500 mg four times a day after food for three weeks. This should increase your calcium level. If calcium level is very low, then injection of Calcium gluconate can be administered. However, underlying cause should be treated. I would also suggest you to take vitamin D supplements for better calcium absorption. For protein supplements, I would suggest you to increase dietary protein like pulses, soybean and tofu in your daily diet. You can also take Protinex with milk.
