How to interpret the blood test reports of a cancer patient?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Patient is a cancer survivor. Due to the lockdown, I am unable to do the routine checkup at the hospital. We did some blood tests to determine her health condition.

Please check the reports and let me know if everything is normal or not. She is currently on medications for hypertension and diabetes. I have attached the files.

Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your reports (attachment removed to protect patient identity). Except for some inflammatory markers and glycemic and liver function reports, others are near normal.

I would advise you to get concerned about your blood glucose level and glycemic control. As you have not indicated the medications that you are on, kindly refer to your treating physician, as you might have to increase or upgrade your medication.

Your vitamin levels are also low, viz. Vitamin B1 and others. Your physician might start you on multivitamins and iron tablets according to your reports and might refer you for sonography if required after clinical examination.

To summarize, I would advise you to get an appointment with a diabetologist or a physician for a thorough clinical assessment and vitals. Please start recording your blood glucose and blood pressure regularly with guidance from your treating physician.

  • The probable cause: Chronic diabetes and hypertension. Poor glycemic control.
  • Investigations to be done: LFT (liver function test), USG (ultrasound).
  • Differential diagnosis: Gallstones, hyperlipidemia, and coronary atherosclerosis.
  • Probable diagnosis: Diabetes with complications.
  • Treatment plan: Regular BP and glucose monitoring, lifestyle changes, and adherence to the treatment plan as planned by the treating physician.
  • Preventive measures: Regular medications and aerobic exercise, relaxation, and lifestyle changes with monitoring and guidance under the treating physician.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
