Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son is 2.5-year-old and was born as a premature baby in the 34th week. He constantly keeps getting colds, coughs, and fever from the first few months. I had been diagnosed with allergic rhinitis three years back, so I had been on antihistamines (Cetirizine 10 mg) throughout my term on severe sneeze days. I do not know if he has got this because of me. Also, he is always on some medicine. Is it okay for a small kid to be under medication for almost ten days every month?

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Your baby is at high risk of hyperactive airways due to prematurity and strong family history. But, I believe if the baby's Immunity is constantly looked after, he should be fine as he grows. The main trigger for repeated episodes is the baby's poor Immunity and environmental factors like poor air quality, dust, smoke, etc. Give him a high protein diet containing 1.5 gm/kg/day of protein. For a proper diet, follow a strict diet plan. Give Calcium and vitamin C supplements. Add five to eight servings of fruits and vegetables with different colors as they have antioxidants. What is his hemoglobin level? Low hemoglobin is known to affect Immunity. Add Iron supplements if iron is low. I suggest you give syrup Hemsi (Ferrous fumarate, Folic acid, vitamin B12, Lysine hydrochloride, elemental Copper, Zinc, and elemental Manganese) 5 ml once-a-day empty stomach. Deworm him with syrup Bandy Plus (Albendazole and Ivermectin) 2.5 ml weekly every six months. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with them and take medications with their consent. I understand too many and too frequent medicines are not suitable for children; try home remedies for simple coughs and colds. He had a history of febrile convulsion, so be alert if there is a fever as repeat episodes of convulsion are very high; bring down the fever as early as possible in such cases. I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
