Is platelet transfusion necessary for an ITP patient?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My daughter had a complete blood count, which was normal except for platelets. She is asthmatic and has got a chest infection now, and she is receiving antibiotics. She has her period now. Two days ago, the platelet was 14. When she was a child, the case was confirmed as ITP, but she was fine until last week. Some doctors suggest admitting her to the hospital and getting a platelet transfusion.

What is your opinion?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Rule out other causes of thrombocytopenia, like uremia, malaria, and dengue.

I suggest you have a peripheral smear examination and IgM dengue testing. If no specific cause is found, ITP (idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura) should be considered. In this case, tablet Prednisone can be taken.

I suggest you consult a physician first and admit her. If bleeding occurs, then a platelet transfusion is needed.

I hope this helps.

Thank you, and take care.
