How to manage congenital heart disease?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My cousin, who is six years old, has a small 2 mm hole in his heart. He sometimes takes deep breaths and has been frail since birth. He was born via C-section. His father also has a chronic heart condition, and his father’s sister passed away due to heart disease. All the necessary tests have been completed. Does his condition require surgery?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your brother is suffering from congenital heart disease. It is most likely an atrial septal defect (ASD), a ventricular septal defect (VSD), or a patent ductus arteriosus. I suggest getting a 2D echocardiogram done, as it will help us locate the exact cause and position of the hole. Regarding your question, the location of the 2 mm hole will help us determine whether it can close spontaneously or if surgical closure is needed. Please attach the detailed 2D echocardiogram for further professional advice.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
