Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Can STDs cause lasting damage to your vocal cords? I am asking this because my best friend is a singer and is afraid she will never sing properly again. I just do not know how to calm her down. She gave a blowjob to a man before, after which she started coughing and had a fever. Someone said she might have laryngitis and inflammation.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concerns.

There are many viral infections (like herpes and papillomavirus) that can be transmitted through oral sex and exchanging body fluids. Still, they affect the oral cavity and not the vocal cords. Therefore, I think she could have a benign vocal nodule unrelated to the mentioned sexual behavior. I suggest that she should undergo indirect laryngoscopy to be accurately diagnosed. Also, chest infection must be excluded as she experienced coughing and fever. Does she have any chest pain?
