Patient's Query

Hi doctor.

I need help in reading my corneal topography result. Do I have keratoconus, and if yes, how bad is it? What does the 80 % normal mean? Can you please explain each number in the chart? Lastly, what are my treatment options? My right eye hurts every morning I wake up. I started seeing the double vision and triple ghost images for three weeks. I was also diagnosed with astigmatism. I am using artificial tears now. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The numbers on your keratotopography signify the thickness and the geometry of the cornea, meaning if the corneal surface is usually quite spherical in all its aspects, any areas with increased thickness in comparison to the other areas of that cornea are considered an irregularity. In your case scenario, irregularities were detected in those red areas that look like an inverted butterfly. These irregularities are common for astigmatism, which was detected in your case at 4 diopters more than it is for keratoconus, which usually presents as a red circle in the center of the cornea. Keratoconus is usually a condition that you are born with, and it progresses as you grow and can cause serious problems for the eye, but in your case, it's just a form of astigmatism which usually remains stable after 21 years of age and is corrected by glasses, contact lenses or refractive surgeries. Please continue to use the artificial tears in a continuous manner before and after you correct this irregularity of the cornea with the methods mentioned above. Best of luck.
