Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 5-year-old son has had a cough for two weeks. He does not have wheezing or fever. His doctor has prescribed syrup Asthalin 2.5 mg four times daily and syrup Allegra 30 mg 5 ml twice daily. However, there is no relief. I am worried.

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to iciniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I reviewed the prescription you shared (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). As per the prescription, your doctor has suggested treatment for an upper respiratory tract infection. If you are sure there is no wheezing or fever and no response to the treatment, I suggest you stop the medications and go for a CBC (complete blood count) and chest X-ray.

As there is no fever or breathing difficulty, the condition is benign. So, do not worry. However, is there any enlargement of the tonsils, as it can also cause chronic cough?

I suggest the below tips:

  • Warm saline gargles three to four times a day.
  • Avoid outside food and cold drinks or water.
  • Give him homemade soup.
  • Use Honitus cough syrup (Ayurvedic Formulation) 5 ml thrice daily.

Kindly revert with the reports for further guidance.

Thank you.
