I am six weeks pregnant with a mild cramps throughout the day. Is it normal?
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am pregnant and I had my last menstrual period before two months. Before a week, I had an hCG of 2961 mIU/mL. I took an hCG test two days back and it was 13862 mIU/mL. I have mild cramps throughout the day and it worries me a lot. I am not able to get an appointment with my gynecologist. Please suggest.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Your hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) shows an increasing trend and it is absolutely normal. Mild cramps occur as a part of normal pregnancy in many women and it is similar to period cramps. They last up to 16 weeks. It usually occurs due to the expansion of the uterus and there is a rise in progesterone levels. You do not need to worry. If the cramps are unbearable or if there is any associated bleeding or spotting, then it is necessary to have attention and you need to consult a gynecologist immediately. You can start taking Folic acid supplements daily for up to 12 weeks.
Patient's Query
Thank you doctor,
I do not have bleeding but there is mild pain in the lower abdomen. I am taking Folic acid daily. I have a history of ectopic pregnancy and my left fallopian tube was removed. I am worried. Is it normal to have dull pain throughout the day?
Hi,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
Even when there is a history of ectopic and removal of one tube, many women move well with pregnancy and delivery. Mild cramps are absolutely normal. You are five weeks and six days pregnant as per your last menstrual period, and tomorrow you will become six weeks pregnant. If you are anxious, you need to get an ultrasound to confirm the intrauterine pregnancy and viability too. The cardiac activity appears most often in six weeks and it can be late for nine weeks in some cases. It is necessary to know the location of the pregnancy as you had a history of ectopic. You get an ultrasound from the local gynecologist and it helps to relieve your anxiety. It is normal to have cramping throughout the day during the initial weeks of pregnancy.
