Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had intercourse one month back. So my period usually comes in the first week of every month, but my period did not come yet. I had also done a pregnancy test at my home last week and it came negative I was also under stress.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I understand your concern. Just repeat a home pregnancy test today or tomorrow and if that is negative then it is not because of pregnancy. If this is for the first time that your periods are delayed then we can just wait for your periods. A pregnancy test usually comes positive on the first day of the missed period if a woman has a regular cycle of 28 to 30 days. If you would have conceived then your test would have been positive by last week. I just want you to repeat the test to make sure that the last test you did was not a false negative. If this comes out to be negative then stop worrying about pregnancy.

There are many causes of delay in period. The most important factor is stress and weight gain. There are other conditions like PCOS, and thyroid disorder but to make a diagnosis I might need to run some blood tests. Did you take the emergency pill after intercourse? If yes then this could be the cause of hormonal imbalance. Get a few blood tests just to find out the cause of this delay.

  1. Thyroid profile.
  2. Serum prolactin (before getting this test any kind of breast stimulation or sexual activity needs to be avoided for 3 days).

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
