Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 77-year-old grandfather has been experiencing increasing forgetfulness, difficulty walking, and trouble speaking. It is becoming a concern for our family. Are there any lifestyle changes, nutritional recommendations, or other non-invasive measures that could potentially help improve his overall well-being?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for taking help from a psychiatrist. I can understand your problem and the situation of your grandfather. He may have dementia. You must take him to the nearest psychiatrist for further evaluation and treatment. It is a chronic neurodegenerative disorder. Medication will only slow the progress of illness but cannot cure it. You should tell him to follow the below lifestyle to keep his cognitive function improving and will help him.

1. He should do exercises daily for 30 - 45 minutes like at least going for a walk.

2. He should do meditation for 20 minutes daily, just sit in one place in a comfortable position and try to concentrate on his normal breathing, do not stop or force himself to stop his thoughts, just let it be.

3. He should eat healthy home-cooked foods, and avoid junk foods.

4. He must drink enough water.

5. He should spend quality time with friends and family daily.

6. He should spend time on creative hobbies like reading good books, writing journals, painting, drawing, and learning new skills or language or musical instruments.

7. He should get seven to eight hours of sleep daily.

8. He must avoid tobacco alcohol or any substance abuse.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please, let me know if you want some help.

Thank you.
