Can dental infections cause radiating pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had an abscess in the tooth and I consulted a dentist. The dentist informed me that treatment can be done after the swelling subsides. I have been taking the tablet Penicillin for a week. However, swelling is still present, and the left lip and chin are still numb. Now I am experiencing severe pain in my left armpit. Are these symptoms related? Kindly give your suggestions.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. You have been taking the tablet Penicillin for the abscess in your tooth. Persistent pain indicates that the source of infection is not addressed. The tooth pain can radiate to the neck, head, and arm on the same side. Antibiotics offer symptomatic relief, and treatment procedures are essential for complete relief. It includes the following:

1. Draining the abscess if found.

2. Root canal treatment based on radiographic findings.

3. Extraction in case of severe damage.

I suggest you take the following tablets: (consult with your dentist and discuss with him or her before taking these medications)

1. Tablet Amoxiclav 625 mg (Amoxicillin clavulanic acid) thrice a day for five days.

2. Tablet Diclofenac (Diclofenac sodium and Serratiopeptidase) combination twice daily for three days

3. Tab Pantaprazole 40 mg once daily half an hour before food for one week.

Kindly share the following:

1) Intraoral periapical radiograph of the concerned tooth.

2)Photograph of the tooth.

I hope this has helped you out.

Thank you.
