How to treat my abscessed tooth that is draining?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have an abscessed tooth. It has started to drain.

What can I do now?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

An abscessed tooth is an infection of the tooth, most commonly caused by untreated dental caries. When pus spreads into the surrounding tissues, it can cause pain, swelling, and sometimes systemic symptoms. Even if pus appears to be draining, the infection is not completely resolved and should not be ignored.

The presence of fever, facial swelling, or neck swelling suggests that the infection may be spreading and requires prompt medical attention. Abscessed tooth treatment often includes medications as supportive therapy to control infection and relieve pain. A short course of Ofloxacin 200 mg and Ornidazole 500 mg, taken twice daily for five days, may be advised, along with anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen 50 mg and Serratiopeptidase 15 mg, taken twice daily for three days.

It is important to note that medications alone do not cure a dental abscess. Definitive treatment requires dental intervention, such as drainage of the abscess, root canal treatment, or tooth extraction, depending on the severity of the infection.

I hope this answers your query.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
