Can teeth remain intact after removal of the retainer?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 30 years old and have had a retainer for 12 years. The reason I have had it for so long is that I have two fake teeth on each side of my main front teeth. I cannot get implants because of the way my roots are going. I could get a retainer without the bar, but unfortunately, I do not have the money for that. I was just wondering what would happen if I clipped the bar off of it. Would it fall out of my mouth, and if it would, and I still clipped it off if you use some type of denture stuff, would that help hold it in place? I have had it for so long I would think my teeth would shift or move. I am just wondering what would happen if I clipped off the bar, it does not have any kind of bracket on the sides like some have. It is just the clear piece on the roof of my mouth and the wire those go over the front of my teeth. I do not visit a dentist or anything right now. I am just looking for some advice. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I would suggest you go against clipping off the bar or wire. The clear piece of the retainer will not stay in place. Even if you used something to hold it in place, it would be of no use as the retention aspect of the retainer will be lost with the wire. I would suggest you wear your retainer only at night. Since it has been almost 12 years since you finished treatment, it would be quite alright to wear it only at night. I suggest you send a picture of your teeth with a retainer and one your retainers outside of your mouth to get a more relevant answer.

I hope this helps you.

Kind regards.
