Can diabetes weaken the immune system?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My grandfather has been a heart patient and diabetic for the past eight years. He has been taking Captopril 25 mg, Amlodipine 5 mg, Glibenclamide 5 mg, and Aspirin 75 mg. However, due to these medications, he has recently started to experience side effects. He has a throat infection and a choking sensation.

Could you please guide me?

Answered by Dr. Isaac Gana

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The infection your grandfather is experiencing is not a result of the medications but rather a complication associated with long-term diabetes, especially in older adults. Diabetes is a chronic disease that weakens the immune system, and age is another factor that compounds your grandfather's health condition. In this situation, the best approach is to maintain his blood sugar levels and treat infections symptomatically.

Thanks and regards.
