Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My father is a diabetic and he is taking Metformin for the past six years. In the last month, he did a general and complete blood checkup in which his blood sugar levels were high, and his cholesterol level was 164 mg/dL. But he did not have any symptoms concerned with this. Our next appointment is in another two weeks, by then is there something my father should know? How can we change his lifestyle to control his blood sugar and high cholesterol levels?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to iclinq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Here are a few lifestyle changes that may help in managing blood sugar levels and cholesterol:

  1. Healthy eating: Encourage your father to follow a balanced and nutritious diet. Focus on consuming whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Limit the intake of processed foods, sugary drinks, and foods high in saturated and trans fats.

  2. Regular physical activity: Engaging in regular exercise can help improve insulin sensitivity and lower blood sugar levels. Encourage your father to incorporate activities such as walking, cycling, swimming, or any other form of exercise he enjoys into his routine. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, along with strength training exercises.

  3. Weight management: Maintaining a healthy weight is important for managing blood sugar and cholesterol levels. If your father is overweight, encourage gradual and sustainable weight loss through a combination of a healthy diet and regular physical activity.

  4. Medication compliance: Your fater needs to continue taking his prescribed medications, such as Metformin, as directed by his healthcare provider. If necessary, adjustments to the medication regimen can be made during his next appointment.

  5. Stress management: High-stress levels can impact blood sugar levels. Encourage your father to find healthy ways to manage stress, such as practicing relaxation techniques, engaging in hobbies, spending time with loved ones, or seeking professional support if needed.

  6. Regular monitoring: Regularly monitoring blood sugar levels at home can provide valuable information about how diet, exercise, and medications are affecting your father's health. This can help him and his healthcare provider make informed decisions about managing his condition.
