Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I went to the gastroenterologist for having blood in the stool. After a couple of weeks, I have other symptoms such as extreme tiredness, unable to eat food, my stomach is hurting a lot, and headaches due to fasting. After a colonoscopy, the doctor told me that I have hemorrhoids. After two days, I had diarrhea and I have been going to the bathroom twice a day. Now, it has been a week and I am able to eat more. But my stomach hurts a lot and I still run to the bathroom at least twice a day.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Having diarrhea after colonoscopy is common and it is not an alarming one. I want to know the reason for your bleeding initially. Please explain about the amount of blood present in the stool and say whether the blood is fresh red blood in drops or it is coming with stool. Please say about the color of the blood whether it is maroonish or black and say whether it is present in clots or drops.

Please say whether you have lost weight and pain while passing stool. Please say whether you have any family member presenting with colon or rectum cancer at a young age. Please explain about the pain whether it is piercing or stabbing type and say whether it is a spasm or colic. Please explain regarding the change in the intensity of the pain during passing stools. Please also say whether you have this pain at night when you sleep. I need this information and upload the tests and colonoscopy reports which is done recently.

The Probable causes

You have overt bleeding. The cause can be solitary rectal ulcer disease, peptic ulcer disease, pancreatitis, hemosuccus pancreaticus, Crohn's disease, and ileocecal tuberculosis.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

The blood was mixed with the stool and it was not attached. It was bright red and I do not have any paper results. The doctor told me after I wake up. I lived with constipation and he told me to take fiber supplements. This is the original reason for having a colonoscopy. This pain makes me to go to the bathroom. I do not have this pain at night. After doing a colonoscopy, I have this diarrhea pain at night.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Well, you had fresh blood and you were constipated, then there is a possibility to have hemorrhoidal bleeding. However, the size of the hemorrhoids is important to know before labeling that this can be the only reason for your bleeding. Pain and a bowel movement following a meal is a sign of hypersensitive bowel or irritable bowel syndrome. Blood in stools with diarrhea suggests an infection leading to sensitive bowel called post-infectious IBS (irritable bowel syndrome).

If the rest of the colon is clear, then you have to do some tests such as upper GI (gastrointestinal tract) endoscopy and CT (computed tomography) scan abdomen in case of recurrent bleeding. Otherwise, we can sit and monitor. Having diarrhea, after doing colonoscopy is quite common due to usage of water for irrigation during colonoscopy. It usually settles in a day or two. You can take oral rehydration solution (ORS) in a liter of water. Take at least one to one and a half liter of ORS for a day or two, till diarrhea improves. If it does not settle, then you can consider the possibility of having post-infectious IBS and I would suggest some medications.

The Probable causes

The causes are hemorrhoidal bleeding, post-infectious diarrhea, and post colonoscopy diarrhea.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
