Can I get an RCT done for a dark tooth and braces later?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Can a darkening tooth be saved with a root canal treatment (RCT)? Also, I want to know if I can get braces after having an RCT on a tooth?

Please help.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Regarding a dark or discolored tooth, the first step is to identify the cause of the discoloration. A tooth may become darker due to previous trauma (injury to the tooth), changes inside the tooth, decay, or other dental problems. Your dentist will evaluate this through a clinical examination and dental X-rays.

A root canal treatment (RCT) is recommended only if the inside part of the tooth (pulp, which contains the nerves and blood vessels) is infected, damaged, or no longer healthy. A dark-colored tooth does not always require RCT. If the tooth does not have a problem involving the pulp, performing an unnecessary root canal is usually avoided.

If the tooth requires RCT, internal bleaching may be considered after treatment. Internal bleaching means placing a safe bleaching material inside the tooth to lighten its color and improve its appearance.

If the tooth does not require RCT, other cosmetic options may include the following:

  1. Veneers are thin coverings placed over the front surface of the tooth to improve its appearance. They can be made from composite material (similar to filling material and placed directly in the dental clinic) or laboratory-made materials such as zirconia-based veneers.

  2. Dental crowns are full-coverage caps placed over the entire tooth to restore its shape, strength, and appearance.

Regarding braces, a tooth that has undergone RCT can usually be moved with orthodontic treatment (braces). However, attaching braces directly to crowns or laboratory-made veneers can be more challenging because they may not bond as strongly as natural tooth enamel.

In some situations, special bonding materials and careful planning by an experienced orthodontist can be used to avoid damage.

Generally, the treatment sequence is planned as follows (this may change depending on your examination and X-ray findings):

  1. Treat cavities and perform RCT if required.

  2. Perform internal bleaching if needed.

  3. Complete orthodontic treatment with braces.

  4. Place crowns or veneers if required after orthodontic treatment.

I recommend visiting a dentist for a proper examination and X-rays so the cause of the discoloration can be identified and the most suitable treatment plan can be decided.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
