Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I just experienced a dog bite, but fortunately, it is a minor injury a mere scratch on my hand with a tear about the size of a dot. I promptly cleaned it with soap. Do I need any further treatment? Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Yes, it is advisable to receive the rabies vaccine. Follow the below instructions:

  1. Administer the Anti-Rabies vaccine on days 0, 3, 7, 14, and 21 post-bite. However, it is crucial to consult your nearest doctor for the vaccine. This vaccine is necessary if there is a dog bite, lick on mucous membranes (nose, eyes, mouth), wounded skin, or a scratch from a dog.

  2. Thoroughly wash the wound with soap under running tap water for 15 minutes.

  3. Monitor the dog's behavior for 10 days for any unusual activity or signs of illness.

  4. During the treatment, there are no dietary restrictions; both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food are allowed. However, avoid alcohol consumption.

  5. Additionally, refrain from taking any vaccines other than tetanus (if necessary) during the treatment protocol.
