What blood tests help diagnose pneumonia and sepsis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was recently hospitalized for double pneumonia and septic poisoning. The doctor says that hospitals need to conduct blood tests to check for HIV, hepatitis C, hepatitis B, hepatitis A, and tuberculosis. I have also learned that my former sexual partner from three years ago is HIV positive, and a former sexual partner of my previous sexual partner is also HIV positive. Therefore, I want to know about the routine blood tests that hospitals typically require in cases of double pneumonia and septic poisoning.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern. Based on the information you provided, and considering the history of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) in your sexual partners, I suggest that you undergo the tests suggested by the hospital. Since you are hospitalized for double pneumonia with septic poisoning, it is important to undergo the following tests: Routine blood tests. HIV test. Complete urine analysis, including tests for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Abdominal ultrasonography scan. Chest X-ray with a posteroanterior (PA) view. Sputum test for AFB (acid-fast bacilli). If needed, an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the whole abdomen. Hepatitis A, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C tests. Other tests may also be advised according to your symptoms. I hope this has helped you. Please follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
