What causes a dry mouth after receiving a dental filling?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had a cavity filled last month. It started hurting me, and though the pain subsided, I now experience the sensation of clenching my teeth and have a very dry mouth. What could be the reason for this? And how can I resolve the issue of dryness in my mouth? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Well, a dental filling does not cause dry mouth. In only one case, it can cause dry mouth; and that is an allergic reaction to the filling material, but it is very rare. Other causes that commonly cause dry mouth are:

  1. Severe dehydration.
  2. Side effects of medications (if any).
  3. Salivary gland dysfunction.
  4. Nerve damage supplying salivary glands.
  5. Oral infections like thrush.
  6. Sjogren's syndrome (a disorder of the immune system characterised by dry eyes and dry mouth) etc.

For dry mouth, I suggest you do the following:

  1. Chew sugar-free chewing gums.
  2. Drink plenty of water.
  3. After consulting your specialist doctor, use specialized mouthwash formulated for dry mouth patients, like Biotene (Xylitol, Sorbitol, Propylene Glycol, and Poloxamer 407).
  4. You can also instill artificial saliva drops.
  5. Suck tart candies as it also stimulates salivary flow.

If it does not improve, consult an oral physician and get yourself evaluated.

I hope this information helps.

Thank you.
