Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 33 years old and suffered from fear of swallowing after a bad stressful event, and I tried a lot to work on myself. Now I can eat bread slowly but not rice or vegetables. I do not want to take medications and get addicted to it till the end of my life. What should I do? I am tired of this. After undergoing severe stress one day, I felt something stuck to my throat, and when I tried to remove it, I was choking, and then I could not eat properly. I wanted to eat fast and finish it, but I could not. I underwent a blood test that revealed low vitamin D and B12 levels, and I am taking medications for the same.

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

In my opinion, the main problem is anxiety, and you should take medications for it. Please provide me with more details about your condition, and answer the questions below,

1. Do you feel anxious most of the time?

2. Do you have difficulty swallowing only after anxiety?

3. Have you noticed any weight loss due to this?

And, I suggest you to follow a few instructions mentioned below,

1. Take the tablet Zoloft (Sertraline) 100 mg. Take one tablet daily. Zoloft takes up to one month to show its effects, and it does not cause addiction.

2. Take the tablet Itopride (prokinetic benzamide derivative). Take one tablet three times a day before meals to improve gut motility.

3. Also, continue taking other medications.

Consult a physician, talk with them and take the medications with their consent.

If you have severe swallowing difficulty, try to consume liquid or semi-liquid foods like soups, yogurt, mashed potato, etc.

I hope this helps you.

Kindly follow up with the answers.

Take care.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
