Can small flesh colored bumps on fingers be contagious?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had eczema on the inside of my right hand for about ten years now. It seems like it has slowly started to heal. But now I have a new problem popping up. There are small flesh-colored bumps on my fingers that are multiplying in clusters. They look and feel like small clauses.

After a shower, they turn white and very unsightly. I had one, just like this, three years ago. I have about twenty such on the palm side of my fingers, mostly on my ring finger. Do you know what they are?

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern and will try to help you with it.

I saw your clinical picture (attachments removed to protect patient identity). You have rough, raised slots on your fingers. These are palmar warts. Warts are a viral infection caused by the human papillomavirus. This is a contagious condition. It will spread to other sites if not treated.

The spread of a wart also depends on your immune system. I suggest you schedule an appointment with a dermatologist to get rid of them. Treatment options include:

  1. Liquid nitrogen cryotherapy.
  2. Electrodesiccation.
  3. Topical TCA (trichloroacetic acid) application.
  4. Topical salicylic acid and lactic acid combination.

Do get treated as soon as possible.

You can always reach me at icliniq.com.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply.

I will make an appointment with a dermatologist.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I read and understand your concern.

Let me add some more information about warts. Warts are contagious. Hence, avoid touching it or picking it. Touching it with the other hand constantly can lead to the spread of the wart to the other hand. Zinc supplementation and a protein-rich diet will help boost immunity.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reach out in case of further queries.

Thank you.
