Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 25 year old female, I have had three unsuccessful pregnancies. Currently, I am 12 weeks pregnant, and I have done TORCH test as asked by a local doctor. The reports showed Rubella antibody IgG 138 IU/mL positive, but IgM negative 0.12 IU/mL index. It also showed Cytomegalovirus IgG positive 46 IU/mL, but IgM negative 0.07 IU/mL index. And Herpes simplex IgG positive 3.67 IU/mL, but IgM negative 0.37 IU/mL. My BP, hemoglobin, blood sugar and TSH (I have hypothyroidism) are normal. I had a fever, cough, and cold from two days. I currently take Susten SR 300, Fol XT, and Eltroxin 50. Is my baby at risk? The doctor prescribed Natclovir medicine for ten days. Is it necessary? Can this medication cause any problem to the baby? I have also got an ultrasound done, and the reports show live pregnancy with 167 heartbeats. I am very tensed, and please help. I have attached the reports.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

These are all IgG antibodies which are positive, but not IgM. IgG antibodies are a sign of chronic infection, but not an active infection. So, there is no risk of any infection to you and your baby. Secondly, I do not know why your doctor has started you on an antiviral treatment (Acyclovir), it is not necessary for the TORCH report (attachment removed to protect patient identity) which you had. If you had previous three failed pregnancy, I think you should start on Ecosprin (Aspirin) tablets and not Acyclovir. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with him or her and start taking the medicine after their consent. Do not worry and remain calm, stress is not good for pregnancy.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for your kind suggestion. I have not started taking Natclovir considering the side effect it may have on my baby. I read over the internet that some virus can get reactivated inside the body. Recently, I had a fever with a cough. So, I am very nervous.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There is no harm in taking antiviral, and the relapse rate is less. But, what is more important is to prevent bacterial infection. So, if you had fever and cough, you should take some antibiotics. Do regular gargles and steam in case your cough and cold persist.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
