Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 50-year-old male, slim, and quite health conscious. Today I had a package blood test done. Other things are fine but in LFT total bilirubin is 1.47, direct bilirubin is 0.22, and indirect bilirubin is 1.25. SGPT and SGOT are normal. All other parameters are normal. I do not have any problem right now.

Two months back I had some food on a train which led to vomiting and diarrhea for one day. After ten days, I had abdominal pain for two-three days. Then acidity in the stomach here and there for some days. It all lasted for about two months, during which I lost two to three kg of weight also. But now my appetite is perfect, and I have resumed my regular exercise. Stamina is also fine. I had a cough and cold for a few days, which is ok now. Please guide me on what could be the cause for these elevated levels of bilirubin. I suffered from viral hepatitis when I was about 25 years old.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You do not have any complaints.

1. Total bilirubin 1.4

2. Direct bilirubin 0.22.

3. Indirect bilirubin 1.25.

Only total bilirubin is slightly elevated. For some people, if no complaints, this mild increase is common. So, you need not worry.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I was worried about having some infection in my liver. Is it fine to take Seacod liver oil capsules? I have taken one Seacod brand capsule daily for the last three months. And is it fine to go for the hepatitis B vaccine?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

As per your previous history, you had viral hepatitis 25 years back. You must have immunity for hepatitis. But we do not know what type of virus A, B or C. No harm in taking hepatitis B vaccination you can take. Cod liver oil is good can take.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your answer.

I am quite well, no problem. One more thing, two years back, my lipid profile in a similar package test was:

Total cholesterol -196 mg/dl.

LDL - 125 mg/dl.

HDL - 61 mg/dl.

But this time, total cholesterol is 214 mg/dl.

LDL - 133 mg/dl.

HDL - 55 mg/dl.

I presume the reason for this could be that I have not been doing any exercise for the last three months, and I drunk two glasses of full-fat milk daily since my childhood, a little bit of ghee and butter. I do not drink tea or coffee, and I do not smoke. BP is normal to date, no diabetes, no family history of any cardiac disease, and was physically quite active throughout my childhood, with a thin and slim build. I eat 1 to 2 bananas daily and at least one seasonal fruit, and I rarely eat fried food.

After this year's test, I have switched to toned milk and stopped saturated fat completely. Kindly guide me on what else to do to reduce my cholesterol levels.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Do not worry. Your total cholesterol and LDL are borderline. We can bring it down to normal with diet and exercise.

What about the Triglyceride level?

Go for brisk walking daily for 45 minutes. Avoid spicy and fatty food. Since you have standard diabetes, blood pressure, and no cardiac problems, we can manage with diet and brisk walking. After one month, repeat the lipid profile.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
