Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 54 year old male. I have floaters in my eyes. Mostly on the right eye and sometimes on the left. I also have dry eyes. Here are my optomap images from the optometrist for your evaluation. Please guide me.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Floaters in the visual field can be due to many reasons. The common causes are retinal tear, retinal detachment, vitreous detachment and vitreous inflammation. In your case, your pictures (attachment removed to protect patient identity) of both eyes look similar and I do not find anythingabnormal with that. It looks like normal variations in the color of the retina. If you had nevus in eye, causing floaters, then it can be confirmed by a detailed evaluation of fundus by IDO (Indolamine 2,3-dioxygenase), 78 D lens examination, scans like OCT - optical coherence tomography of the retina , B-scan , FFA - fundus fluorescein angiography. You can send pictures of old records for more suggestions.I hope this helps you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply

Do I have nevus in my eye? Are there more than one? How big is it in mm? Is it something to worry about? How common is this? What is the chance for this to turn into melanoma? Please clarify my doubts.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

You do not have nevus and it is not a condition to be worried about. Choroidal nevus is common. High risk factors to turn into melanoma are increase in size in subsequent follow up, old age, retinal detachment and sub retinal fluid. Thickness is more than 2 mm. I hope this helps you.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Is steam room bad for the eyes? Mine gets watery and itchy sometimes, especially the right eye. Can it cause nevus? One optometrist said I have no nevus when he took the pictures, but another when she looked at it said there is nevus in the right eye. Is it that dark oval shaped thing? And there is even she said another smaller one above it. Can you please check it again? Much appreciated in advance.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

There is absolutely no relation between steam bath and nevus. It is not bad for eyes unless there is direct exposure to heat. Yes, I have gone through the pictures again and seen those two spots you have mentioned. It does not look like nevus. However, it should be examined clinically for confirmation. The quality of the pictures are not clear and optometrist examination is different from eye specialist examination . Also, we do not get a 3D image in photographs, which we get during direct examination. I can assure you that it is not a condition to be worried about.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
