Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

About 6 days ago I noticed a painful sore or lesion right next to one of my molars. It was very red and white and now it is mostly white. Even though half the sore touches my tooth, the tooth does not hurt at all. It is very painful to floss and eat anything spicy. Should I see a dentist? How urgent is this?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have seen the picture of lesion and from it, it looks like gingivitis as the surrounding area is inflamed (attachment removed to protect patient identity). If you ask me ideally, then there is a definite need to see a dentist as it takes time to heal spontaneously and there is a possibility it can spread to adjacent areas. But in regard to your question about urgency, I do not think that is the case. Since it has changed from red to white which indicates that the healing process is ongoing.

What you can do at this stage is buy a Chlorhexidine (mouthwash) from nearby grocery or medical store and do three times gargles. Take 10 ml of medicine with 10 ml of water and thoroughly rinse it in the mouth for two to three minutes. This will help you in early healing. Other than that, keep on watching it. If there is an increase in size, pain or redness report me back.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
