What are the treatments for receding and bleeding gums?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I went to the dentist recently and they told me that I have gum disease and receding gums but there is no damage to my teeth or bone so I just have to improve my brushing. Since then I have taken their advice seriously but my gums still bleed, my whole mouth is sensitive and I have noticed my teeth feel slightly loose. It is currently impossible to visit a dentist so I am concerned. I have been having bleeding gums since childhood. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am here to answer your queries.

From the X-ray and pictures (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity) that you have shared, it obviously seems to be a gum disease. Your lower front teeth have gingival inflammation better known as gingivitis. Gingivitis needs to be treated by a procedure called gingivectomy, meaning the removal of excess gingiva (gums). There are not many home remedies and they are not much effective in this case yet I can understand the current pandemic situation cannot permit you to go out. For now only until the situation gets better try the following:

1. Warm water salt rinse three to four times daily.

2. If you can get some guava leaves crush them and mix them with warm water and use them as mouth rinse for one to two minutes and spit out.

3. Crushed cloves act as good oral treatment in treating tooth pain and gum diseases or if you can get clove oil that will be great to apply.

4. For loose teeth, you can apply a mixture of table salt and mustard oil where there are loose gums and then later spit it out.

5. Rest, keep brushing your teeth twice daily. Kindly use a soft bristle brush and do not brush very hardly or for a very long time. You need to brush softly for one to two minutes only.

6. Before brushing apply toothpaste all over the teeth and at the place where your teeth attach to the gums. Leave it for two to three minutes and then do the brushing. After brushing, give a soft finger massage on all teeth, especially the gums.

7. Brush in a circular manner and not in up and down motion.

I advise you to do complete deep scaling and root planning as soon as things get better in your area.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
