Can PCOS lead to excessive hair shedding?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a lot of hair shedding, and it makes me self-conscious. I thought it was just damage (even though I never heat-styled it or dyed it), so I cut it really short. The hair shedding did not stop, so I tried to change my routine and only wash and brush my hair once a week because I found that a lot of it comes out when I brush it after showering. It has been a long time, and it still has not stopped. A friend told me that I might have PCOS, but I do not have excessively oily skin and excessive hair growth in other parts of the body, or weight gain. But my period has been irregular ever since I started having it when I was 13. I am 19 now, and it has never been regular.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Irregular periods and hair fall can be due to iron deficiency as well as any fever like typhoid and also due to hormonal disturbances. You can start an Iron tablet and go for an ultrasound to confirm polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) and apply onion oil. You can prepare it at home by boiling onion in coconut oil.
